A Vision for Food Sovereignty in CT

We imagine local and regional food systems organized around community and ecosystem wellbeing. Our shared vision for regenerative, democratic, and interdependent food systems includes:

  • universal access to affordable, culturally relevant, and nutritious food;

  • food as a human right, dignity and autonomy in accessing food and working in the food system;

  • food and farm workers are paid a living wage, have quality healthcare and housing, and are protected from exploitation and violence;

  • diverse, cooperatively owned food sources, including farmers’ markets, grocery stores and food co-operatives, community gardens, urban farms, and food hubs serving all urban and rural communities;

  • diverse ownership of farmland and fisheries;

  • robust market channels that connect local and regional farmers to local and regional consumers;

  • stewardship of land and waters is in right relationship with the earth and its original stewards;

  • regenerative agricultural and processing/distribution of food that uplifts climate justice and public health;

  • regional biodiversity and robust native ecosystems coexisting with food and agricultural systems;

  • and the restoration of healthy soils, clean waters, and air.
